چکیده

We examined the influence of meme consistency (vs. inconsistency) and intragroup status on the spread of memes in virtual communities. Prior research suggests that information consistent with the theme of the group is remembered better and that ideas threatening to the group identity are rejected. In addition, previous research shows that low-status group members mimic high-status members and communicate with them to seek information and approval. We analyzed social interactions among members of four online forums from January 1, 2010, to February 21, 2014. Contrary to our prediction, our results show that memes initiated by low-status members spread faster than memes started by highor moderate-status members. In line with prior research, memes that were consistent with a forum theme were spread more frequently than inconsistent memes.

Modeling and simulating the emergence of Internet communities: impact of the spread of memes and agent memory

The spreading of memes on the web played an important role in the emergence of Internet communities. The principal purpose of the study is to implement a simulation model to analyze the process of emergence of Internet communities. The model shows the importance of factors such as the interactions between online agents as well as their propensity to adopt and remember new memes. In addition, it...

Memes in a Digital World: Reconciling with a Conceptual Troublemaker

This paper re-examines the concept of ‘‘meme’’ in the context of digital culture. Defined as cultural units that spread from person to person, memes were debated long before the digital era. More adaptable and more capable memes will be more successful in transmitting, spreading to more people, and...

Virality Prediction and Community Structure in Social Networks

How does network structure affect diffusion? Recent studies suggest that the answer depends on the type of contagion. Complex contagions, unlike infectious diseases (simple contagions), are affected by social reinforcement and homophily. Hence, the spread within highly clustered communities is enhanced, while diffusion across communities is hampered. A common hypothesis is that memes and behavi...

Distinguishing between Topical and Non-Topical Information Diffusion Mechanisms in Social Media

A number of recent studies of information diffusion in social media, both empirical and theoretical, have been inspired by viral propagation models derived from epidemiology. These studies model the propagation of memes, i.e., pieces of information, between users in a social network similarly to the way diseases spread in human society. Importantly, one would expect a meme to spread in a social...
